Film Commission Names Development Director

The Piedmont Triad Film Commission has named Lisa Watts to its new position of development director, reporting to Executive Director Rebecca Clark.
Formed in 1993, the commission recruits feature film, television, and commercial productions to the twelve-country Triad region. Its efforts result in more than $25 million spent annually in the local economy, both in hosting the productions and in employing local professionals in the thriving film sector. Four feature-length films were shot in the region over the last 12 months, while “Madhouse” — the History Channel docudrama series shot in 2009 at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem — brought standing-room only crowds to the racetrack this past summer.
Most recently, producer/director Michael Landon, Jr. filmed the Hallmark movie, The Shunning, at sites throughout Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point, and beyond this past fall. The production spent more than $1 million over two months on everything from site rentals, hotel nights, and restaurants to hiring more than 30 local technicians and crew.
In her new position, Watts will work to expand the film commission’s base of support. Current funders include the Piedmont Triad Partnership, City of Greensboro/Guilford County Economic Alliance, Guilford County, City of Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, and the High Point Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Watts’ background in communications and nonprofits includes serving as founding editor of Winston-Salem Monthly magazine, as editorial director of the Destination Publishing Group at Pace Communications, and as a communications and development consultant, most recently for Winston-Salem State University, Go Out For A Run, and NCCJ of the Piedmont Triad.
